FIRE constitutes a pilot program for a new form of French Graduate School. There is no permanent link between a laboratory and FIRE (as generally required in France for Graduate Schools). Rather, the research teams are hosted by FIRE for the duration of a particular PhD thesis. This will be on a specific project, judged sufficiently original and truly interdisciplinary by the International Scientific Committee.
These hosted teams are not disconnected from their usual graduate school. This pilot arrangement ensures that FIRE students may choose in principle any laboratory or combination of laboratories working at the interface with biology. To allow a high level of interaction with other students and participation to FIRE activities (courses, seminars, scientific clubs, etc.), supervision must include at least one laboratory located in the Paris region.
